During a recent discussion on a topic on Mayukh Chowdhury - the renowned Bengali artist and story-teller - at Facebook, a fan commented what would happened if MC was born outside of Bengal/India where his work would had been not restricted in the regional language(i.e. Bengali) but in English and would been read by millions!! And that's so true because his works were mostly free of the regional/national boundary, be it wild-life based comics,or Robinhood comics or those alien tales - all these stories deserve a much wider range of readers because of the contents!
But what a pity that,even after 52 years of his first published work and 18 years after his demise, there is no single translated job done on his work,at least I never seen/heard about any!!(While Narayan Debnath and Satyajit Ray's some works have been already translated,it's baffling why MC was omitted till date!)
That particular discussion promoted me to do the job. And so as a very small tribute to this legendary artist, I have translated one of the Mayukh's earlier work - a fascinating thriller based on the Californian coast - ''শয়তানের দ্বীপ(Saytaner Dweep)" i.e. The Devil's Island!
I have tried every possible way to retain the original feel,starting from the way MC narrated the dramatic events happened there to the font/text color and font size! Hopefully it will show to many,specially those who can't read Bengali,that what a great artist-come-narrator he was!
And then, this is a just very small piece of his numerous work!

ReplyDeleteময়ূখ চৌধুরী তো বই বাজারে খুব একটা জনপ্রিয় চরিত্র ছিলেন না, তাই হয়ত তাঁর বই নিয়ে প্রকাশকদের এত অনীহা!!

ReplyDeleteময়ূখ চৌধুরী বিদেশে জন্ম নিলে ঘটনা কি হত বলা কঠিন, তবে একটা ব্যাপার নিশ্চয়ই লক্ষ করেছ, তোমার ওই ইংরেজি হরফ গুলো বসানোর পরে কমিকসটার চেহারা কি ভাবে বদলে গেছে?
মনে হচ্ছে যেন বিদেশী সিরিজের কোনও কমিকস পড়ছি।
তোমার এই প্রচেষ্টা সত্যিই প্রশংসনীয়।
@Suku, কিন্তু সুকু এখন তো তিনি সব কিছুর ঊর্ধ্বে চলে গেছেন...। ভ্যানগখের কথা মনে নেই, মৃত্যুর পরেই তো তাঁর যথার্থ মূল্যায়ন হল। রেকর্ড মুল্যে বিক্রি হল ছবি গুলো । অবশ্য তা ভ্যানগখের কোনও কাজে লাগেনি, তিনি তো বাঁচবার কোনও রাস্তা না পেয়ে আত্মঘাতী হয়েছেন অনেক আগেই।

ReplyDeleteREST IS HIS MAGIC! AS you rightly said,nobody can predict it was done by a Bengali artist with very little backing and support!!More I think about his works,more I realize his depth!!
And while his fate was somewhat similar with Van Gogh,as you have rightly put,who died as early as on 37 years,Mayukh babu was quite luckier than him in that sense,when it comes in terms of fans' appreciation!! Arre,S.Ray was his fan since the very beginning and allowed him to illustrate in his own story published in his own magazine,Sandesh!:)
So before his last days,MC at least knew what readers think about his works!BUT THEN,there are other needs like proper official appreciations(in the form of prizes,higher pay-packets etc)which he hardly received in his period because back-then there weren't much compilations etc - a pity indeed!!
Between,as MC was a loner in a true sense,so I wonder whether there is anybody who gets royalties from reprints of his work,or publishers earning maximum??Does anybody have any idea??

@Hojo, আসলে এই বাংলার মাটিতে বাঙালী মানুষজনের মাঝে বেড়ে উঠে একজন শিল্পীর ছবিতে এতটা বিদেশী ঘরানার ছাপ বেশ বিস্ময়কর।
ReplyDeleteশিল্পী যে পরিবেশে বড় হয়ে ওঠেন স্বাভাবিকভাবেই সেই মানুষজন গাছপালা নদনদী তার ছবিতে ঘুরে ফিরে আসার কথা। ভ্যান গখ যদি সাইপ্রাস গাছ না এঁকে বটগাছ আঁকতেন ব্যাপারটা বেশ অদ্ভুদ হত।
আসলে যে কোনও সৃষ্টিশীল কাজেই তা হওয়ার কথা...একজন বাঙালী সাহিত্যিকের লেখায় তার সমাজ পরিবেশ আসবে এটাই তো সাভাবিক যদি না তিনি প্রবাসী লেখক হন।
তোমার ওই ইংরেজি হরফ গুলো কমিকসটাতে বসিয়ে দেবার পর এতো dramatically ব্যাপারটা পালটে গেল...ওই কমিকসটার একমাত্র bengali identity ছিল ওই bengali speech balloon গুলোই।
সত্যিই বিস্ময়কর।

If u remember,he wrote in that "Comic Jokhon katha bole" how publishers shudn't looking for cheap profit('Chobite Adventure' niye bolte giye) and shud go for National level i.e. he had a dream for larger exposer!!
Anyway,his all ROBINHOOD and WILD-LIFE stories are left...slowly but steadily we wud translate more...and as I said, 'we' i.e. more parallel work will only enrich it!!

@Suku:Arre bondhu,Mayukh babu Western character/background niye onar kahini gore tulechilen ar tar jonno kichu to back-ground inspiration dorkar??(And it was quite a common practice...even famous Phil Davis did this back in '30s..all might be to reduce their work-load and effort!But it's their credit that they blend those 'lifts' in their stories uite well..)

Why does Suku expect Bengali Background for a Foreign Character like Robinhood!! It is supposed to be foreign-like.
