Comic #138-139 : Two FG sundays from the late '70s in Bengali

In this post you will read a couple of late '70s Flash Gordon sundays in Bengali, both were reprinted in Indrajal Comics under a single title "হারিয়ে যাওয়া মহাদেশ" in 1988. Just like the previous post, these strips were also reprinted in the Bengali newspaper Jugantar

Just one thing to keep in mind that, while these are the official version but not complete i.e. drop-panels(two left-side panels) were not included in this version. As a result, many of such 'drop' panels are available in the Indrajal as ToI did use the whole strip, even though the story was little edited to fit in their book-format. The fans who have this Indrajal issue, can easily compare these two versions.

Comic #128 : Modesty Blaise in BENGALI - "সঙ্ঘ"(La Machine) - ৫ম পর্ব (Part-5)

The Final part..

Now you can read the complete Bengali version of the first Modesty Blaise adventure.
(For the old posts, just browse through the blog archive.)

By the way, I know many fans read comics/other reading materials on the mobile, mostly due to quick access/absence of the pc etc, but if you have pc/tab, then I will suggest you to read the complete story on those devices than on mobile - mostly because the source-material(scan) quality was not great(I have used an old scanned version available on net) AND while reading on mobile, that is little more evident but same strips look fine on the pc etc. Just a suggestion.

This is an attempt to translate Modesty Blaise daily strips in Bengali and it's always best to start from the origin story - titled "La Machine".

I will post the whole story in a few parts.  The first part already has made available.

Comic #123 : Modesty Blaise in BENGALI - "সঙ্ঘ"(La Machine) - ১ম পর্ব (Part-1)

This is an attempt to translate Modesty Blaise daily strips in Bengali (details already given in this fb group post) and it's always best to start from the origin story - titled "La Machine".

There are some famous series where basic setting & explanation of the origin etc were given in the subsequent stories, primarily because creators couldn't fully envisioned the basic set-up when they were scripting the first story.
And then, there are some series where almost every major aspects were explained in the very first story, and then maintained throughout the series with some secondary changes/introductions. Modesty Blaise falls in the second category, and hence reading this origin story is very important to understand the basic theme and mood of the series. Once you have done with this story, it won't matter whether you are going to read the very next story or the 20th story, or even some from the later run!

I will post the whole story in a few parts.

I love Modesty & Willie's adventures, how J.Holdaway portrayed them and how Mr. Donnell scripted the stories. And every time I read them, I wished these strips were available in Bengali.
I do hope you will like this version.

A Query on Bengali Indrajal e-Comics List & A Compilation of the Bahadur BERAL

Do you have the current list of digital copies of Bengali Indrajal Comics?? As I have checked Devil's blog,he has made that 'members only' i.e. blocked for all visitors!Donno why, might be he has his reasons! Also it seems that at the BanglaTorent, they have covered almost all issues from No.300 to Vol.27 - a commanding job no doubt - but still I couldn't made a list of Indrajals published from the below 300 range! Can anybody help???Suman,Walker,MS or even Devil(I have already sent him a mail regarding this)??? It will help to avoid duplication for all bloggers who are willing to post Bengali Indrajals.
At least I need the infos about these following Ijcs whether these are already published elsewhere or not!

--------------------------------------------
Now,after seeing the Walker's post on Bahadur Beral(the "Brave Cat"),the colored comic-strip created  by famous cartoonist Narayan Debnath,I have posted a comment on the publication history of the same based on my 'memory'.But I had some doubt and hence today searched my old issues of monthly Bengali magazine Suktara - where this naughty cat was first appeared and is still under publication - to have a closer look on this matter and now here it is as follows :

To start with, I had a wrong idea over frequency matter. Bahadur's adventures were NOT published in a regular fashion, unlike the other strips by Mr.Debnath( Batul,HB etc),but much like in a random frequency!Sometimes published in back-to-back 3 issues and other time only 1 story in 4 issues! After having a closer look on my issues from early '90s, it seems more or less the frequency was 2-strips-per-3-issue i.e. in average 8 adventures per year(12 issues).Over the years, specially from the late '90s, frequency was even lowered.

Anyway, now why all these matter at first place??It's because a new Bengali publisher,Lalmati, bought the licence of Debnath's strips and released 2 volumes(each is 40-pager) of BB in the 2011, as you have already seen in Walker's post, and now they have apparently stopped, leaving an impression in the readers' mind that all/almost all adventures of this naughty cat have been covered in those volumes.Sadly that is not the case!!
Now there is no exact knowledge of total number of strips of BB published till date but a rough calculation can be presented as follows:
From 1983 to at present,on 2013,a total of 350+ Suktara regular issues were published with 30 odd Puja-Annuals where the strips were usually 2-pagers!So following the above mentioned frequency,a total of 200-250 odd regular pages plus 50 odd pages from the special issues. In a total a minimum of 250-300 odd pages worth of adventures were published till date, leaving some more or less 200 odd pages worth of these strips yet to be published as a collection!

So we hope that the publisher, who is unfortunately looks like more in money making than maintaining a standard printing quality and story selection, will cover all these remaining stories in the upcoming volumes(that might need another 4-6 volumes),ardent readers and all die-hard fans of Narayan Debnath can have the full series in their hand!!Will they??

Now,you can see a few vintage 1-pagers from the early '90s issues of Suktara ,some are included in those 2 volumes. Will post few more in the coming days!(Walker has already posted a 20 odd strips of BB,so check his post for more such strips! :) ) After comparing LP's reproduced version & these 20-30 years old original pages from Suktara,I have personally felt that latter ones had much better printing quality eventhough LP used thicker & bigger pages! Those who have seen both versions can understand this..

Comic #91 : A Compilation of Nonte-Phonte Comic-strips

Friends, here you can enjoy a compilation of 4 different comic-strips of famous Nonte-Phonte,created by our one and only NARAYAN DEBNATH! These stories were(and still are) tremendously popular in the '80s onwards! Moreover, who can forget their arch enemy - Keltuda??? :))

                                               DOWNLOAD Nonte-Phonte

As you know Mr.Debnath had created several other famous fun-series like Batul the great,Bahadur Beral(The Brave Cat),Danpite Khadu(Naughty Khadu) as well as several adventure stories. But his very first creation was Handa-Bhonda(Stupid & Idiot) in 1962 i.e. exactly 50 years ago!On this golden jubilee occasion a local newspaper dedicated the cover-story of their sunday-magazine on Handa-Bhonda & Debnath's creations in general. That was a nice write-up indeed filled with so many unknow trivia & a brief interview of this great creator.
Also, this issue has the rare very first 1-page strip of Handa-Bhonda.You will be amazed to find out how their looks were changed/modified with the time! :o)

Flash Gordon Sunday-Strips from Diamond's Comic World Magazine

Diamond Comics(DC) had published some Flash Gordon strips in their famous CW magazine and all of these were from Post-D.Barry('51-'91) era. These strips were appeared in CW,right from the #1 issue. However, those strip-dates were sometimes edited but thankfully they kept some of those boxes(with the year of publication).
Don't know if any more other strips ever appeared in that magazine but these three are all I have seen till now(and all from '96).
  • S190 - "Nightfall on Mongo" (4/28/96 to 8/25/96)
  • S191 - "The Way it Began" (9/1/96 to 9/29/96)
  • S192 - "The Return of Ming" (10/6/96 to 12/22/96)

BENGALI Newspaper & maagzine Section:

------------------------
This is the final batch of the অরণ্যদেব aka Phantom-Sundays published in the Indrajal Comics. From the next post, you will see some of the Post-Indrajal strips..

  • S129 - The Fighting Twins
  • S131 - The Bride of Xali
  • S132-  Exodus of the Little People
  • S133 - Death from the Sky
------------------------------------
Now,before going to the actual strip pages, let's have some look at these old, vintage ads/articles used appear in the '80s Desh(the magazine where these strips were published,as I've mentioned before).Buddies,do these trigger some old nostalgic memories?? :))

Now the Sunday pages....
(Carefully look @the 2nd & 3rd panels of the following page.Indrajal skipped these(in V25 N18-19:Raiders from Amaland) where it has been mentioned Hero as well as (for the first time)Devil's origin! While Hero was introduced in a old daily strip(by Falk himself),for Devil, that concept was originally from an Egmont classic : Devil's Story aka 'Deviler Golpo' - published by Dev Sahitya Kutir in their short-yet-successful Aranyadev series on 2003!)
