The Devil's Island'(aka 'শয়তানের দ্বীপ') by Mayukh Chowdhury in PORTUGUESE(পর্তুগীজ)

UPDATE (31/8/2014) : Now in SPANISH!! After English and Portuguese, 'Saytaner Dweep' - the original Bengali creation by Mayukh Chawdhury, now has been translated in 3 languages - ALL on 2014(and the original story was created on 1965).
The Spanish title is "La Isla Del Diablo" and JABATO did the job!!
Thanks mate...
Here is the link of La Isla Del Diablo

Hopefully,in the coming days MC work will be translated in more such languages!
----------------------------

Friends,
You might have remember that few months back I have translated a Mayukh Chowdhury comics based at a Californian coast - শয়তানের দ্বীপ(Saytaner Dweep) - in English, titled : The Devil's Island.
The purpose was to spread this legendary artist-cum-storytellers' creation among the millions of English speaking readers as all original MC works are in Bengali only and none of those was ever translated before in English, making MC works restricted within the Bengali readers only!

But no more!

Our one of the Brazilian bloggers Celso Nunes(aka KALL) read that MC story in English and he liked it and felt it should be spread among his native fans i.e. Portuguese readers.

So here is his own translated version of "শয়তানের দ্বীপ" in Portuguese, from the English version itself(and his photoshop work made that story even more stuning!).

The title is "A Ilha do Diabo"...
(Visit his blog and download this version)

  • Original Creator(in Bengali) : Mayukh Chowdhury
  • Translator(in English) : HojO(SP Ghosh)
  • Translator(in Portuguese) : KALL(C.Nunes)
This has been discussed at Facebook too...
--------------------------

While most of the Bengali readers can't read Portuguese ,we really appreciate the way he helped to spread a MC work among the readers whom nobody could imagine will read a Bengali illustrator's native creation!!

It surely IS a great day for all Mayukh fans!! :-)

Comic #112 - The Devil's Island by Mayukh Chowdhury[Translated]

(a few lines by me as a tribute to Mayukh Chawdhury)

During a  recent discussion on a topic on Mayukh Chowdhury - the renowned Bengali artist and story-teller - at Facebook, a fan commented what would happened if MC was born outside of Bengal/India where his work would had been not restricted in the regional language(i.e. Bengali) but in English and would been read by millions!! And that's so true because his works were mostly free of the regional/national boundary, be it wild-life based comics,or Robinhood comics or those alien tales - all these stories deserve a much wider range of readers because of the contents!
But what a pity that, even after 52 years of his first published work and 18 years after his demise, there is no single translated job done on his work,at least I never seen/heard about any!!(While Narayan Debnath and Satyajit Ray's some works have been already translated,it's baffling why MC was omitted till date!)

That particular discussion promoted me to do the job. And so as a very small tribute to this legendary artist, I have translated one of the Mayukh's earlier work - a fascinating thriller based on the Californian coast - ''শয়তানের দ্বীপ(Saytaner Dweep)" i.e. The Devil's Island!

I have tried every possible way to retain the original feel, starting from the way MC narrated the dramatic events happened there to the font/text color and font size! Hopefully it will show to many, specially those who can't read Bengali, that what a great artist-come-narrator he was!
And then, this is a just very small piece of his numerous work!

 Cheers!!
  • Original Story Title : শয়তানের দ্বীপ(Saytaner Dweep)
  • First Publication Year : 1965
  • Original Version : Bengali
  • Creator : Mayukh Chowdhury (1926-1996)
  • Translator : HojO

PS - This blog has completed it's 7th anniversary on the 6th of this month! So you can also consider this post as a belated anniversary post! :o)

Comic #101 - Saytaner Dweep(The Devil's Island) by Mayukh Chowdhury

Those fans, who used to read Bengali comics since '70s to '90s, are much familiar with one of the finest & unique illustrators(& script-writers) of original Bengali adventure comics : Mayukh Chowdhury!! He was one of those lesser exposed yet quite talented artist we got in India. The thing I loved most, and still get fascinated,is his dynamic & realistic art where you can't predict the panels' size nor shapes. Infact,he took full liberty of comic-book-format,which gave him much scope to showcase his talent, unlike the restricted boundary of newspaper comic-strips!
Some of his old arts were once compiled by Deb Sahitya Kutir - one of the leading book publishers in Bengal - in June 1982 along with 3 other artists incld. the famous Narayan Debnath! The title of that 16-story special comic edition was "Chobite Adventure(means Graphic Adventures)". [The cover is bit torn as the book is more than 30 years old,so bear with me,but I was lucky that the inside pages were all in good shape..In my knowledge, only another fan & avid reader cum blogger,Indranath has this rare book in his collection!]

One of those hand-picked was Saytaner Dweep(The Devil's Island) - a full-color thriller based on a true incident happened near California,US.

Post Script - A couple of trivia: (i)For some strange reason, original photograph of this famous late artist is not available with us but some artists who met him personally, drew his image which you can see as follows incld. the b/w art done by N.Debnath.

(ii)A huge compilation of his several creations was published few years back by a publisher, Lalmati, which covered most of his work,if not all!The printing was decent, some few pages were in color too, but the reproduction was inferior compare to the original old printing which was ,infact, much better as I have some of his old stories from Suktara magazine!

Now,read the full story of Saytaner Dweep here as I am posting all single pages to avoid MF's constant deleting of the d/l links!
