BIJOYA Special : Comic #115 : Tarzan Daily by John Celardo(Tarzan Meets Countess Oro) in BENGALI

            To ALL friends & visitors..
     --শু বিয়া and HAPPY DUSSHERA ---
The latest on-going Tarzan daily  at the Bengali newspaper : BARTAMAN! This is a re-run series of old, vintage strips and this one(Tarzan Meets Countess Oro) is from 1965 and 147th in the order...  (The novelty of this Bengali version is that, apart from these Bartaman cutting,no other printed version of these TARZAN strips were ever published anywhere in Bengali.)

In this post,I am posting the Part-I of this strip as it's yet to be concluded. Will post the last part when it will end(scheduled at the end of this month only)..

ENJOY!!(scans of some of the strips are not at-par alignment wise, but there would be no problem reading-wise nor I had any agenda to make a print-ready copy,so..)

Now,who is ITO(ইতো)??
The boy mentioned in this story,or on that vase to begin with, has a long history and association with Tarzan.Much like what Rex is meant for Betal/Phantom,ITO is for Tarzan. He is kind of foster-father of this lost child he rescued from a crashed plane in mid of a dense forest..
To to know him better,I would suggest you to read this following tales - centered on ITO(as I don't have the Bengali version,so attaching the original English strips here) :

DOWNLOAD Tarzan Rescues Ito+The Storm(D133+D134 ; 1962)

Between, you can read Russ Manning's TARZAN Sundays(colored) at my other blog Bengali Treasure-Trove(BTT)'s Tarzan section.
-----------------------------------------
Now,let's discuss something related to my recent old-book hunt.On the last month, I got a very old UK based comic series book,ACTION SERIES from the '60s era, from one of the one of the old-book sellers! This particular book features Mandrake, published exactly 50 years ago,on August 1964 in the United Kingdom.

I was at first quite surprised by seeing this 50 years' old UK Mandrake book at Kolkata market, rather odd connection! But then, anything related to Mandrake & Phantom are like treasure for me.
Between, that seller asked just 20 INR!! (Any other seller would charged a much higher price but somehow he didn't realize it's worth. However, one of the nearby sellers was giving expression like he  missed a good opportunity!! ;-) As On August 1964,Indrajal Comics was just a 6-month-old series, and the Bengali version was yet to introduced - enough to indicate this books' rarity and worth! )

Back at home,my optimistic mind was hoping for more such Mandrake issues from this publisher but then the famous MandrakeWiki ends all hope as it's clearly mentioned there this was the ONLY Mandrake story published in this UK based ACTION SERIES(there, however, few other heroes were appeared, not much known to us other than Secret Agent X9(Corrigan) and Flash Gordon, though!).

The story inside was from the 122nd daily strip titled,Master of Magic, also published in the Indrajal much later,on November 1975(Issue No.241(Eng/Hin)/No.219(Ben)).
-------------------------------
  • Series Name : ACTION SERIES - GOLD TOKEN BOOK
  • Publisher : Young World Publications(UK)
  • Issue No. : 6
  • Hero Featured : Mandrake
  • Story Title : Master of Magic(D122; 1963)
  • Publication Period : August 1964
-------------------------------
PS - In the UK many publishers tried their hand on Mandrake and among them Miller did the best job..

Comic #108 - A Post-Indrajal Phantom Sunday(Capt. Amazon - Pirate Queen; 1989)

                                        HAPPY VIJAYADASHAMI TO ALL
Enjoy a old Phantom strip(S134) in color and in Bengali. In this tale of 5th Phantom(aka Aranyadev), it has been shown how a gentle, beautiful lady transformed in a dreaded pirate queen - Captain Amazon! Later she became the wife of 5th Phantom!
The most famous quote(of Juliet) probably was "Call us pirates! Then we'll be Pirates"!!

Between, the colored pages are from famous magazine Desh. This strip ran for 24 weeks but I have only 18 sundays till now, missing remaining 6..
So I did two things, firstly used English b/w strips to fill the gap and then translated those in Bengali. Hopefully you will like the effort!(I have tried to bring the feel of Desh in those pages albeit the colors! as unfortunately I have the b/w English version only.)
And for the Indrajal addicts, this is a special strip as with this one,the Post-Indrajal era was started off (the last sunday appeared in Indrajal was S133 "Death from the Sky"  in Vol.26 No.41). Had Indrajal survived for another extra month,we might had this very nice story in the pages of one of the most famous comic-magazines

There were 45 Phantom sundailies(by Falk) from the Post-Ijc era but only very few were worth reading....this one was among those very few!
A translated page....b/w scan is from Frew 1465....

Comic #95 : RK-D154 : A Post-Indrajal Rip Kirby Daily

SUBHO BIJOYA(শুভ বিজয়া) & HAPPY DUSSHERA to the ALL friends & visitors!! :)
-----------------------------
This strip was the 1st Rip Kirby daily after the cancellation of RK licence by ToI. The last Indrajal-Rip story was "The Foiled Coup(V26 N29; July 1989)"  based on RK-D153(newspaper title is unknown, ran from 1988-07-18 to 1988-11-05).
In my early years,I was never a big fan of this cool detective but over time I did like some stories and the ones by RK's last writer, John Prentice(1986-1999), were my favorites among the all RK stories published in the Indrajal Comics between 1982-1989.So I was kinda in a hunt for the RK strips published in the late '80s to '90s. Courtesy of delboj who gave the link of PTN Archive,I have extracted the pdf files from there and followed by a jpeg conversion, the strip is here![Well, from that site one can extract the whole comic-page/day only that used to carry several other strips incld. Rex Morgan,Blondie,Beetle Bailey,Hagar the horrible etc. as you can see in the following page.]

The scan quality is mediocre but PTNA is the only known source of Rip Kirby's last decades worth. Also,I have no idea if there was any magazine that carried RK '90s strip in English.Well,as I had mentioned before,a Bengali newspaper ABP used to carry RK daily strips in Bengali till the end(1999) but neither they have any on-line archive prior 2001 nor they are interested(I have sent numerous number of mails for the permission, with a payment, but till date I yet to receive a reply!).

Now,before going for the actual strip let's have a peek, for nostalgia sake, at the initial & end dates of "The Foiled Coup" in the original strip-format & in the Indrajal's format! :)
  • RK-D 154 : Title is Unknown : Ran from 1988-11-07 to 1989-02-04 ( Story revolves around the beautiful Pearl Shelby, the senator's daughter, and her mysteriously disappeared finance which needed Kirby's intervention that leads a good suspense & drama-filled adventure. While one will find Pearl in a quite important & central role,Desmond was missed indeed - appeared only in a few panels!!)
------------------------------------------
Also, check the 1st strip of the next daily: RK-D155, dated 2-6-1989:

Comic #45 & 46:Mandrake Sundailies:Kraken(S156) & Dollmaker(D100)

Subho Bijoya to all friends, fellow bloggers & visitors!! :-)
Today's Gandhi's birthday and tomorrow we'll celebrate Laxmi puja and in order to celebrate these occasions I'm presenting a couple of mandrake strips for all of you!
#1:Kraken(S156) from 1986 which had already appeared in Indrajal comics and all have read already BUT what I'm posting is Unedited b/w version which appeared in a US magazine 2 decades ago...it covers the 1st strip only.Soon I will post the remaining parts!

#2:Dollmaker(D100) from 1958.A old daily which never appeared in Indrajal or any other Indian comics.I can assure that, once you read this strip, you'll wish to re-read it again!! yeah...a old classic filled with thrill, mystery & adventure in each & every panels where the mystery evolved in a old forgotten town:Gynt! Also, this is one of those rare adventures where Mandrake's half-sister Lenore also involved...(Now,when reading this Dollmaker strip, seasoned Phans will find a very prominent similarity with another Classic Falk-Phantom!Well,that's no big surprise as we all know,he frequently used same basic-plot in both Phantom/Mandrake strips....well,some plots were worthy of that and believe me,this current strip is no exception!:) )

Now about d/l links, actually I've uploaded these 5-6 months back and then completely forgot!!Otherwise these post would had appeared much earlier....but as they said, late better than never,so eNjOy!!:_))))
